Alfred L. (Babe) Simmons, 85, of the Nile Valley, died Sunday November 28, 2010 from complications due to a stroke. He was born February 7, 1925 in the Nile Valley. Babe used to tell stories of living in a tent near the river during his childhood. He enjoyed the outdoors, cutting wood for heat for his home, camping, fishing and hunting. He was a self-made man, and could fix almost anything. Mr. Simmons lived in the Nile Valley all of his life. He served in the Navy during World War II. He was very proud of his service to his country. After returning from the war, Al worked for the Simmons Lumber Company for 20 years. In 1965 he joined the International Union of Operating Engineers where he worked driving heavy equipment and as a diesel mechanic. He also worked on many major road projects in Washington. He had many interesting stories related to his work on the Alaskan Pipeline until his retirement. Babe loved his family and would do anything for them.
Mr. Simmons is survived by his wife of 62 years, Roberta (Linder) Simmons; a son Ernie (Robin) Simmons of Naches; daughters Debbie (Larry) Simmons of Gleed and Mary (Steve) Smith of the Nile; son-in-law Tim Hals of Gleed; grandchildren, Kory (Kristi) Simmons, Tara (Robby) Mize, Kindra Hals, and Krista Hals; great-grandchildren, Allison and Glenn Simmons and Brent and Shawn Mize; also numerous nieces, nephews and friends who were very close to him.
