Annabelle “Annie” Marie Hawks passed to everlasting life May 29, 2018 at the age of 92. Annie was born March 18, 1926 in Blunt, South Dakota to Ora and Tillie Shore. She was the oldest of nine, born on her mother’s birthday. As a child Annie and her family moved to Minnesota where Annie grew up helping her father in the fields using a team of horses, she helped her parents by caring for her younger siblings and working around the home, she always preferred to work outside rather than inside. Following her high school graduation in 1947 Annie braved the train and traveled out to Yakima for a job. Her boyfriend/future husband Charles joined her. Charles Hawks and Annie where married that same year in August and had two daughters Carol born in 1948, and Connie born 1954.
Chuck and Annie raised their family in Selah, living in the same home over sixty years. Annie helped support her family by working in the fruit industry for fifty years. Chuck and Annie loved the outdoors, together they camped, fished, snowmobiled, boated, hunted and in their later married years spent time as snowbirds to Arizona. After Chucks passing in 2001, Annie continued with her traveling enjoying beautiful scenes and wonderful times in Alaska and Hawaii. Annie was able to seize the moment often enjoying eating out and going to movies whenever the opportunity arose. Annie had many hobbies, in the summer she thrived as a gifted gardener who always had the most beautiful yard and flowers, she lovingly hauled hoses over her large green lawn every summer up until she reached her late 80’s. In the early fall, Annie canned mostly peaches and pears, but also vegetables and jellies. She made the best apple pies and spent many winter evenings cross stitching or making lap quilts. Annie was a self-taught seamstress, making her own clothing as a young woman and as a young mother she sewed dresses for her girls and even continued sewing for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Annie was such an established seamstress that she lovingly made four beautiful wedding gowns first for her daughters and later for her granddaughters. At the age of 65, Annie had had enough of being chauffeured around and decided it was time for her to get her own drivers license which she successfully did after three tries 😊.
Annie was the “best in the world” mother-in-law to Tom Dearborn and Stan Shipley. She was the proud grandmother to six lucky kids; Charles (April) Dearborn of McMinnville Oregon, Chad (Janet) Dearborn, Paul (Andrea) Dearborn all of Moses Lake, Bonnie (Bryan) Corrigan, Joleen (Jason) Ringer and Josh (Melissa) Shipley all of Selah. She had some special hands-on relationships with each of her fifteen great grandchildren. She wore the name of Grandma Great or Grandma Hawks from Charles, Sara, Megan, Cory, Owen, and Devan Dearborn as well as from Branden (Destiny), Wyatt, and Levi Corrigan; Amanda, Brice and Erin Ringer; Haley, Nathan and Ryan Shipley. This past January Annie became great-great Grandma to Clare Dearborn. She is survived by her sisters Julia and Alice and her brothers Walter (Jo), David (Carol). She is preceded in death by her other sibling’s brothers Verle, Leroy, Bernard and sister Lorraine.
Annabelle was a very much-loved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She was a faithful and caring wife to her husband Chuck for over 52 years. She was a long-time member of Selah Covenant Church. Annie gave us excellent examples on how to live out one’s faith and treat others. She truly was one of the most caring and gentle person ever known, just ask any of her family!
As a family we want to send a sincere thank you to the caring staff at Selah Care and Rehab where Annie lived the last four years of her life.
Visitation will be held at Keith & Keith Funeral Home on Sunday, June 3, 2018 from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be Monday, June 4 at 1:00 p.m. with burial to follow at West Hills Memorial Park.
