Bertha Ficek was born on June 27, 1922 in Belfield, North Dakota, to John and Clara Ott. Bertha was raised on the family farm and became essential care giver to her youngest siblings. Bertha married Blaz Ficek on October 16, 1946. They soon decided to head west to Yakima, Washington, in 1956. Bertha raised her children while working in the cannery.
Bertha had an active retirement. She enjoyed organizing polka festivals and entertaining friends and family. Berth enjoyed crafting, sewing, and playing cards. She was a wonderful cook who took pride in preparing holiday meals, delicious pastries, and desserts. If you didn’t find Bertha in the kitchen she was likely outside tending to her flowers and garden. She loved to travel and spend time with family across the country. Bertha also enjoyed being a grandma and was so proud of each and every one of her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Bertha is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Rod and Sharon Ficek of Yakima, WA, their children, and families: Kris and Krista Castellanos with their children Claire, Jenna, and Sara of Aliso Viejo, CA; Sarkis Semerdjyan and Tara Ficek, their son Matthew of Glendale, CA; Calvin and Heather Trent and their daughter Breanna of Yakima, WA; Eddie and Tyler Ficek of Yakima, WA. Bertha is also survived by her daughter Sheri and son-in-law Neil Crannell of Vancouver, WA, their children, and families: Amber Krummel and Mary Beth Brammel of Fort Collins, CO; Phil and Jessica Miller with their children Joel and Kaitlyn of Woodburn, OR; Emily Lang of Milwaukie, OR. Bertha is also survived by her siblings Maggie and Anna of Washington, Jenny of Tennessee, Susan of South Dakota, Marge of Oregon, Betty of New Jersey, and Joe of North Dakota.
Bertha was preceded in death by her parents, John and Clara; her husband Blaz and siblings John, Casper, Eva, Jack, Anton and Vince.
Visitation will be on Monday from 4 to 7pm with the recital of the rosary at 6pm at Langevin-Mussetter Funeral Home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at 11:00 am at Holy Family Catholic Church. Interment to follow at Calvary Cemetery.
