A graduate of Hope High School in Providence, Rhode Island, he enrolled at Providence College (PC). After his first year, he left PC to join the Army overseas. Upon completion of his duty, he returned to his studies at PC graduating with a Bachelor’s degree and an interest in pursuing a legal career. This interest led him out West to Spokane where he enrolled at Gonzaga Law School. It was there that he met Patricia McGean whom he would marry. Upon graduation from law school, Donald and Patricia settled in Yakima and would spend the next 46 years making their home and raising their family.
Donald loved the practice of law and its challenges having worked as a deputy prosecutor, a name partner in a small firm, and as a solo practitioner. While maintaining his solo practice he also enjoyed working as an attorney in both the juvenile and adult court systems of Yakima County.
While growing up in Rhode Island his parents and siblings summered every year on Block Island, a special place where he would later take his own family during summer vacations. He loved island living and upon his wife’s death in 2011 decided to enjoy his retirement years in the sunshine and warmth of Kauai. He was able to enjoy six years there before returning to Washington to be closer to his girls.
Donald is survived by his daughters, Kathleen Shaw of Seattle, and Anne Everett of Bellevue; three granddaughters, Emily, Alissa, and Ashley Everett; and his brother Lawrence Shaw (Joy), of Florida.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia; his infant daughter, Mary; his brother, Edward, his sister, Marjorie; and his parents, Edward and Anna Shaw.
The family is grateful for the love and support of Donald’s many friends and extended family.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Family Church Chapel, 5315 Tieton Drive, Yakima on Friday, February 23, 2018 at 10:30 a.m.
