with her loving son and daughter in law, David and Lorraine at her side. She was 88 years old. Doris was born January 28,1927 in Lebanon, MO. She was one of four children born to Lanceford and Bessie Starnes. She met the love of her life, Warren "Van" Van Alstine, while she was working at Yakima City Creamery. Warren was driving bus in Yakima at the time. He always said "it was the uniform that caught her eye". She was the prettiest girl in town and he finally won her over with a trip to Ellensburg for ice cream in his fancy car. They were married in Pasco, Washington in 1946. Doris had a tremendous work ethic and was always the consummate professional. After starting in an entry level job at Yakima City Creamery Doris worked her way into management at what later became Maid of Clover. Later in life she worked at Inland Pipe where she worked in accounting and reported to Jim Woods. Doris and Warren also owned and operated an orchard as well as a bowling alley in Selah named Starlight Lanes. (The former Helms Hardware building) She and Warren were never afraid of hard work. They also owned a car wash business and started the first mobile truck wash business in the valley.
Doris and Warren raised four boys and one daughter while simultaneously running all of these businesses in the Yakima area. Doris was a devoted mother and wife. Warren was the love of her life and he meant everything to her. They were never apart in 67 years. Friendships were very important to both of them. She had a very special friendship and affection for Danita and Craig Tullis, Ray and Carol Hager, Vie Jansen, Rod and Donna Sorensen, Dave Cox and Alan Bade. These special friends were always willing to give her and Warren a helping hand when needed. Doris and Warren went on several Alaskan and Caribbean cruises with their son and daughter, David and Lorraine and friends. The most important thing in life to Doris and Warren was their relationship with each other and their children.
Doris was preceded in death by her beloved husband and best friend, Warren on October 5th 2013 as well as two sons, Buzz and Keith. She is survived by four loving children, Robert VanAlstine of Seattle, Carol Long of Selah and David Alstine (Loraine Miller) of Selah. Doris had a very special relationship and friendship with her daughter in law, Lorraine Miller, who was always there for her and was at her side with son David as she peacefully passed away. Doris also had a very special affection and relationship with her youngest and only surviving brother, Don Starnes of Seattle.
