

She was born in Escondido, California on November 18, 1923 to John and Mabel DeShaw Emmons. She had her third birthday in Brush Prairie, WA and stayed there until moving to Yakima in 1947.
After graduating from Battle Ground High School and a business course she did office work until going to work at the Keiser Ship yard in Vancouver where she became a burner.
In 1943 she married her high school sweetheart Everett Schell. There were married for 62 ½ years. They had many adventures during WWII. Riding the bus to San Diego when Everett was in port and once a train trip to Norfolk, Virginia where he was in port for 30 days. This was with an eight month old baby.
Hazel spent most of her life as a homemaker and mother of four, grandmother of five, great-grandmother of 19, and step-grandmother of three. For many years she did scheduling for the Plaid Door. She did the book work for Everett’s business. She enjoyed gardening and trips in their motor home, also a cruise to Mexico, a trip to Hawaii and visits to her sister in Alaska.
Hazel is survived by her daughters Marilyn (Neil) Nyyssela, Nina (Dick) Baxter; sons, Roger (Karen) Schell and Alan (Hiedi) Schell; grandchildren Melody (Dave) Benton, Mark Babbitt, Renee (Darren) Smith, Brice (Melissa) Baxter, Amanda (Dave) Kuster, 3 step grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband Everett Schell, her parents, an infant son Ronald, two sisters, Ettie and Adeline; and two brothers Dave and Ray.
Viewing will be on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at Keith & Keith Funeral Home from 4 to 8 pm.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at 12:30pm at West Hills Memorial Park, with a Memorial Service to follow at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church at 1:30pm.
