After an extremely short-term bout with cancer, Lyle R. Woolf passed away on December 1, 2014 surrounded by his family.
Lyle was born in Vancouver, Washington on February 14, 1929. At Vancouver High School, he lettered in basketball, track and football. He continued his love of football at Washington State University and pursued studies in pharmacy, earning his Pharm D degree. While at WSU, Lyle was an active leader in the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. His no-nonsense demeanor earned him the nickname "Smiley". His charm earned him the attention of WSU Delta Gamma sorority gal, Carol King and they married in Vancouver, Washington in 1953. One year later, they moved with their newborn son to Gunter Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama. As a Second Lieutenant, Lyle was an instructor in aviation medicine and medical response. The young family moved back to Washington State where Lyle practiced pharmacy at Wasem's Drug in Clarkston. In 1963, the family moved to Yakima where Lyle set up shop as the owner and operator of Woolf's Drug. Lyle worked tirelessly to earn the respect and meet the pharmacy needs of the community. Eventually, he added two smaller pharmacies in Yakima's medical center.
Every year, Lyle, Carol and the kids headed to Seaview, Washington to enjoy the beach house founded by Lyle's parents when he was a boy. Lyle was at his most relaxed while in Seaview. Days marked by daily walks through the dunes to the ocean, the ritual of walking to the local market to buy the morning paper and clam digging in the wee hours of the morning. Lyle and Carol also enjoyed travel with family and friends to Mexico, Hawaii and Europe. Football season found them in Pullman as enthusiastic and devoted WSU Cougar fans. Lyle was an active member of the Yakima Elks Golf Club both on and off the course.
Lyle cherished his family. He was a loving, jovial and devoted husband, father and grandfather, offering much love to his dogs and "granddogs". Lyle is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Carol Woolf; his son, Lindsey Woolf of Hillsborough, CA; his daughters, Sharon Woolf and Susan (Marc) Pollard of Seattle; and his beloved grandchildren, Madeleine Stein, Dylan Stein, Rachel Pollard, and Jessica Pollard of Seattle.
A viewing time is offered at Keith & Keith funeral home on Thursday, December 4 from 4:00-8:00pm. Private interment at Terrace Heights Memorial Park. A celebration of Lyle's life will be held at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Yakima on January 10, 2015 at 2:00pm.
