April 29, 1927 - December 8, 2025
Naomi Gayle (Rice) Bender was born on April 29, 1927, in Yakima, Washington, to Leo and Katherine Rice. The oldest of ten children, Naomi grew up with a strong sense of family and responsibility–qualities that would shape the rest of her life. She ended her formal education after the eighth grade in order to help care for her younger siblings, who loved her deeply and often thought of her as a second mother.
At the age of 18, Naomi was hired by Pacific Northwest Bell as a telephone operator. She took great pride in her work, often sharing fond memories of connecting calls by plugging in the switchboard lines. With dedication and exceptional work ethic, Naomi built a long and successful career, retiring after 40 years of service.
Naomi is Survived by her son, Larry Bender of Yakima, WA, and her ''bonus-daughter” Kat Floyd of Yakima, WA, who lovingly cared for her in her later years. She is also survived by her sisters Barbara and Elaine; her brothers John (Mary), Ron, and Douglas (Karen); and by five grandchildren– Rebecca, Amy, Shawn, Daniel, and Meaghan–as well as 11 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren,
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leo and Katherine; her siblings Gary, Robert, Bernice, and Maxine; her oldest son, Daniel; and her beloved husband, Clements.
Known affectionately as Noner-Belle, Naomi was the heart of her family. A gifted cook, she was famous for her potato noodles, a dish cherished by generations. She loved to read, play cards, and spend hours with family. Rummikub was her game of choice, and she delighted in teaching each grandchild how to play. Naomi’s laugh was unforgettable –warm, infectious, and full of life–but it was her hugs that made those around her feel truly loved.
Naomi touched the lives of everyone she met. Her kindness, humor, and open-hearted nature left lasting impressions, and no one walked away from her presence without feeling her friendship. She will be remembered for her deep love of family, her strength, and the joy she brought into every room.
Naomi’s legacy lives on in the many hearts she shaped and the generations of family who adored her. She will be profoundly missed and forever cherished.
