Richard was born In Yakima on June 28, 1952 to William D. And Gayle L. Harris. He spent his early childhood in Cowiche. In 1963 the family, which had grown to include sisters Kristina and Anne, moved to Yakima. Richard graduated from Eisenhower High School in 1970 and Pacific Lutheran University in 1974. In 1975 he and Lorrie (Ann) Havnaer, a classmate from the Cowiche days, were married.
After their marriage, Richard and Lorrie settled in Othello, where Richard worked as an accountant for Chef-Reddy Foods. His career took him and Lorrie to Park Rapids, Minnesota for eight years and eventually brought them back to Othello, where he was plant controller at McCain Foods. In 2006, they returned to the Yakima area.
From the time he was a young teen, nothing made Richard happier than spending time in the Cascade Mountains of Central Washington. Whether climbing, hiking, backpacking, or just out for a late afternoon drive, the mountains were the place he felt most at peace. He didn’t need to visit new places to keep the experience meaningful; the top of Bear Creek Mountain was as awe inspiring the tenth time as the first.
Richard was preceded in death by his father William. He is survived by his wife, Lorrie, of Moxee, his mother Gayle Harris and sister Kristina Harris, both of Yakima, sister Anne (Jan) Mettler of Spokane, and nieces Erin (David) Brown of Richland and Erica (Devon) Schefano of Honolulu.
A celebration of Richard’s life will be held this summer, in the Cascades he knew and loved so well. Time and location will be announced. To celebrate the life of Richard visit www.keithandkeith.com.
