Sharon was born on June 24, 1950 in Yakima, Washington to Edward and Patricia (Schultz) Berg. Sharon grew up in Yakima with four siblings in a busy household. She attended parochial and public schools, graduating from A. C. Davis High School in 1968.
Sharon earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Oregon and her Master’s degree in Engineering from The Evergreen State College. Her career encompassed positions with numerous municipalities including Seattle, Renton, Federal Way, and Pierce County, among others.
Sharon had many interests. As a young woman, Sharon trekked through Europe, getting around to various countries with a Eurail Pass and staying in hostels along the way. She was an avid reader. She generously passed on her love for reading by supplying family and friends with loads of books each year - more than any of us could read! She spent many hours knitting and assembling quilts.
Sharon wed Robert Griffin in November 1975. In addition to being best friends and soulmates, Bob and Sharon had many common interests - art, traveling, bicycling, and being life-long vegetarians. They shared a deep love for art and enjoyed learning about an artist’s work, often adding one or more pieces to their own collection. Perusing their mostly modern artwork was always a highlight for anyone visiting their home. They built many memories on their travels together. While on a road trip through the West or other locale, they frequently assembled their folding bikes for sightseeing.
Bob and Sharon were perfect hosts. Though a fine cook herself, Sharon preferred playing “prep” cook to Bob’s master culinary skills. Family and friends were often treated to gourmet meals or crafted coffee drinks which left them feeling they had a truly special experience. They moved residences often throughout the years, making homes in Eugene, Los Angeles, Auburn, Mercer Island, Everett, Yakima, Lacey, Kennewick, and others. They enjoyed their getaways in Ocean Shores and the Blue Mountains of Southeastern Washington before losing the latter to a fire.
Sharon’s husband Bob Griffin passed away in September 2023. Sharon is survived by siblings Tom Berg (Doni), Chris (Berg) DeLaney, and Kathy (Berg) Myron (Steve), several nieces and nephews, cousins, and her aunt Cydnie (Marlene Berg) Hill, age 93.
Sharon will be remembered as the compassionate and generous person she was, giving to others from her abundance. Upon her husband Bob’s passing, Sharon donated one of their favorite pieces of artwork, “Alphabet” by Cheryl Hahn, to the Yakima Valley Community College Collection.
A graveside memorial will be held for Sharon at Tahoma Cemetery, Yakima, Washington on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at noon. All are welcome.
