Dear Helen Shannon,

I'm sorry we were not able to attend Steele's service.  Just wanted you to know I enjoyed our visit at your home a while back.  I would tell Rick I didn't see Steele walking today.  We miss seeing Steele taking his morning walks.  I would also honk at him and wave on our way to and from our home.  We live up on Cowiche Mountain at the end of Tieton Drive.  The elk are out right now and I know Steele is looking down enjoying the scenery.

Dear Auntie and cousins,
I was so sorry to hear about Steele.  I wanted to be there with you for his service.  I'm sorry that I couldn't.  I have such good memories of him -  Surprising him one day by walking into Walmart when he was working...  I'll always remember the big bear hug he gave me.  And Chris and Nick and I were honored to be there when he shared his stories about Iwo Jima. I remember playing in the orchards with Nancy when we were little, eating apples that tasted like they were full of sugar, and Steele giving us a ride to the house on the tractor.  Imagine that - no seat belts! Life was good and he always added to the fun.  Your memories must be amazing.  We will all miss him!

Steele is one of the most admired men I have ever known. I feel so fortunate that Steele has shared with me something he rarely talks about with other people and that is his military experience. We served in different wars but this one thing I know; Steele would have taken one for me without giving it a second thought. I read about heroes and see them on TV but I can say without a doubt that I know such a one personally. My comrade-in-arms and friend forever. I loved you Steele Shannon.

Hi Aunt Helen, you and the girls have been in my thoughts for awhile now. Im so sorry for the loss of one of the most loving & fun loving people of my of my life. I remember coming to see You and uncle Steele often. Some of favorite time of my childhood. God Bless you all and we know he is with God.

Aunt Helen and family, Uncle Steele was a beautiful and humble man. So many memories, like the time I lost Peggy in the orchard and he didnt hollar at me.    He and Aunt Helen were life savers when Dennis and I were so poor we didnt know where our next meal was coming from.   We will always remember walking thru the orchard eating peaches off the trees, juice running down our arms and just having a ball.  We thank you Uncle Steele for being such a wonderful role model to all of us and to our children.

Aunt Helen & Family, My heart goes out to you all as well as my thoughts and prayers as you go thru this difficult time.  Uncle Steel was a very special person in all of our lifes.  I know as time past we all grew up and didn't see much of each other, but I have so many found memories of our childhood growing up around you all, as well as my boys they Loved walking up and visiting with Uncle Steel & Aunt Helen,  We love you all very much.

Aunt Helen,Peg, Vickie & Nancy.  It is so hard to know what to say at a time like this.  He was an MAN respected by all and an UNCLE  loved by all his family.  I will always cherish the week I lived with you and worked with Uncle Steel picking pears.  I also will not forget Jerry thowing a big firecracker in my picking bag and burning my leg.  I thought  UNCLE Steele and Hubert were going to kill him.  
Peg, Vickie and Nancy,  your Dad will always care a special place in our hearts.  He treated each  one of us 6 kids with respect and made us fell special.  There is not enough  space to tell you how my he was loved.
Please know you are in our thoughts and prayers.  We love you four.

I was so sorry when I got the call about Steele.  I want you to know that he was a special uncle because everybody loved him and I always thought of him as my "movie star" uncle because he was so good looking and he carried himself in a way that I always admired.  The last time we were there we asked Steele and Helen how they met and we loved hearing their story and then it made me wish we had asked our parents the same.  Please know we are all thinking of you and we will be there on Tuesday if the pass is safe to travel.
