Mom was born to Adam and Mary Hornsberger on April 30, 1922 in Yakima, WA. She was the youngest sister of Kate Siegmeth, Ann Allan, Leone Borton and Margaret Carey-Withers. She graduated from Yakima Senior High School in 1941. After graduation, she worked for the Bureau of Reclamation. During that time, Mom met the love of her life, Leo Gasseling, at a local dance hall. After the dance, little did they know they would end up sitting side by side at the nearby Donut Shop. Dad told mom he would call her in 20 days after hop harvest, he did, and the rest was history. On February 9, 1944, they married, and in 1945 started their family- 5 boys and 2 girls. They lived on the family farm in Wapato, WA their entire married life (65 years) where they enjoyed many meals and laughter with friends and family. Mom enjoyed cooking, baking, playing cards, and was a great golfer.
Mom is survived by her children: Ken (Diane), Don (Sue J.), Dave (Marleen), Ann Niesz (Rick), Mike (Sue A.), Susan, and daughter-in-law Dolores, along with 14 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, husband Leo (2009), and her son Tom (2016).
The family would like to thank Dr. Julia Robertson; Astria Hospice; staff at Peach Tree and Good Samaritan; and Fieldstone Orchard West for the kindness shown to Mom and the family these past months. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice.
There will be a Mass of Christian Burial Friday, December 15, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter Claver, Wapato, WA. Burial will follow at Reservation Community Memorial Park.
