

Tom was one of 14 children. The Schmidt family moved to the Yakima area in 1935. An Army veteran of World War II he married Ismay Somers in 1953. Tom worked for the Yakima Co-op /Cenex for 38 years until his retirement in 1990. He was a member of St. Paul Cathedral.
He greeted customers, co-workers, family and friends alike with his broad smile and easy-going manner. He was well liked by his customers in the Yakima Valley who often shared their vegetables and fruit with him. Tom’s siblings and their spouses would gather at each other’s homes on Sunday’s for card games, laughter, and good food.
He is survived by his wife Ismay; daughters, Nancy Brown of Lexington, Kentucky, Patricia “Pat” Kline (John) of Yakima; sons, Kenneth of Yakima and Bruce (Jana) of Spokane; two brothers, Wilfred (Dee) of Port Ludlow and Leo (Shirley) of Yakima; sisters-in-law, Helen Schmidt, Ena Lange and Inez Gardner; four grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his brothers Paul, Frank, Jack, Peter, and Charles and sisters Kathryn “Kate” Koffler, Rose Reiter, Helen Keller, Pauline Cowley, Anne Ricard and Elizabeth “Betty” Messer.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at Langevin-Mussetter Funeral Home of Yakima. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 4, 2013at St. Paul Cathedral in Yakima. Entombment will follow at Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum.
