He was born on December 1, 1933 in Yakima, WA to Andrew and Florence Meier. He attended Yakima High and went on to work multiple jobs before beginning his career at Boise Cascade as a clipper operator. He retired from Boise Cascade in 1984, enjoying his retirement on the open road by beginning a new venture as a pilot car driver. After 20 years of driving in central Washington, he learned every main thoroughfare, back road, shortcut, and scenic route. Guiding you with ease which route to take on your next road trip.
His love of driving expanded into his many hobbies, including watching professional car racing, enjoying the local speedway, and channeling his inner nascar driver by driving much too fast. When he slowed down, you could find him fishing and meeting for coffee with his many friends. He was always social. Often times you could find him sitting in his chair in the front yard, visiting with all who passed on the sidewalk.
He was a kind companionate man who always offered a helping hand. Over the years, his home became a safe space for many of his daughter’s friends. Walt and his wife, Billie, were anchors in the neighborhood providing rides, meals, or a place to stay without question. He was always reliable, and showed exactly what it was to have a good work ethic.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Billie. He is survived by his daughter’s: Susan Thompson (Dan), Terry Meier (Larry Hamman), Dawn Hull, Penny Thode (Mike), his 5 grandchildren: Trevor Hull, Trent Hull, Monica Thode, Sarah Clifton, and Kristina Hamman, and his 6 great grandchildren.
