Freeport - Charlotte Catherine (Mulcahy) Owen, 90, died Saturday, May 5, 2012, at Hawthorne House in Freeport, Maine, where she had been in long term care since February of 2011.
She was born on September 19, 1921 to Benjamin J. and Dora M. (Cormier) Mulcahy in Worcester, Massachusetts.
Charlotte spent her childhood in the Leicester, Massachusetts area, part of the large and well-known Cormier clan. She and her only sibling Olivine (Mulcahy) Erickson attended Leicester High School, from which she graduated in 1939.
In 1942 Charlotte married Gene Owen, then manager of the Leicester’s famed Castle Restaurant. At the outbreak of World War II, Gene enlisted in the Navy and like many young women of that era Charlotte dedicated herself to home and family while her husband served our country. Daughter Lynda Jean was born while her father served aboard an LST in the Pacific, and the couple’s second child, Donna Lee, was born with the wave of post-war baby boomers.
After the war, the couple moved several times and in 1951 took up residence in Sharon, MA. A move to Yarmouth, Maine in 1958 brought them to their northern New England home for the remainder of their lives.
Charlotte worked for many years as a bank teller for Canal (Key) Bank in Yarmouth, where she endeared herself to customers with her excellent service offered up with stylish fashion and sassy wit, traits that remained with her throughout her life.
Charlotte and Gene were affectionately known as “Mom and Pop Owen” by many of the North Yarmouth Academy and Yarmouth High School sports teams during the time their girls were growing up. Later they avidly followed the activities of their granddaughters, Lisa and Kristen Hathaway. Charlotte’s love of family and sports followed her through the years. She and her husband were members of the “Red Sox Nation” and also enthusiastically attended Maine Mariners hockey games together.
Once her family was grown and husband retired, Charlotte volunteered with the Yarmouth Health Council program as well as providing comfort, advice and assistance to recovering cataract surgery patients. She and her beloved husband traveled and enjoyed exploring many interesting and exotic parts of the world in their later years.
Charlotte’s wonderful legacy will be cherished by daughter Lynda Jean Hathaway of Yarmouth, ME, and daughter Donna Lee Stokes (husband Monty) of Crewe, VA; four grandchildren, Lisa Justice Hathaway of Moab, UT; Kristen Dearborn Stills of Beverly Hills, CA (husband Stephen); Jason Gregory Evans of San Francisco, CA; and Patrick Owen Evans of Denver, Colorado; great-grandsons Henry Owen Stills and Oliver Ragland Stills, great-grandson Hunter Owen Evans and great-granddaughter Madison Clare Evans, as well as beloved niece Sandra Mae (Erickson) Thibaud; best friend Nancy Fernald, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews whom she held close to her heart.
A private service is planned at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth, ME 04096.
