North Yarmouth – Doris B. Hooper, 86, of North Yarmouth was taken home to be with Jesus on March 21, 2012 with her family at her side and into the arms of her other family. She was born in Long Branch, NJ on October 5, 1925, the only child of Susan (Crelin) and Henry Bennett with whom she had a great and loving relationship. She was educated in Red Bank, NJ schools and graduated from Red Bank High School in 1943. She was a “Jersey Tomato” all her life.
Doris first worked in a bakery in Red Bank, then at F.W. Woolworth and at age 17 began a 40 year career with the telephone company where she retired from New England Telephone in 1989. She then earned an Associate’s degree from SMCC and worked for 11 years as a unit clerk on P4-CD (now Gibson Pavilion) at Maine Medical Center. She was known as a loyal and dedicated employee wherever she worked.
Over the years, Doris was a member of the Eastern Star of Yarmouth, the Advisory Board of the Rainbow Girls of Yarmouth, a life-member of the Telephone Pioneers, along with her husband Roger served as Deacon and Deaconess of the North Yarmouth Congregational Church and a current member of the Greater Portland Vineyard Church. In August 1990 she participated in a Tres Dias weekend.
Although she did not travel much she had very fond memories of a trip to Quebec and two trips to the Canadian Maritimes aboard the Friendship Sloop Mary Day. She and Roger, who was the harbor master in Freeport for several years, enjoyed sailing on their sailboat, Thad Too that had a dingy named, Me Too. Through the years Doris was supportive of her daughter Jaimy’s horse activity. She also did volunteer work for over 20 years at the Barbara Bush Hospital revealing her very kind and caring heart.
Somewhat shy and a private person, Doris enjoyed baseball, music, especially Benny Goodman, and to mention – her grandchildren - most of all. She will be remembered for her loyalty, collecting speeding tickets and playing piano.
Doris is survived by her son Roger Owen Bennett of Portland; her Daughter Amy Clements and her husband Doug of Cumberland, her daughter Jaimy Hooper Friedrich and her husband Steve of North Yarmouth and her granddaughter Elizabeth Clements and her fiancé Dan Rafferty of Portland. She was predeceased by her husband Roger in 1999, her son Thadeus Hooper in 1976 and her grandson Luke Clements in 2010.
A celebration of her life will take place at a later time at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth followed with burial in Hallowell Cemetery in Hallowell. Please visit www.lindquistfuneralhome.com to share your condolences, memories and tributes with her family.
