FALMOUTH – Elizabeth “Betty” (Zacharias) Moody passed away peacefully on Monday, February 20, 2017, after a relapse of cancer. She was born on July 10, 1937 in Portland, Maine to Ernest and Dora (Boulay) Zacharias of Falmouth, Maine.
Betty graduated from Deering High School in 1956 and earned a teaching degree from University of Maine Orono. At UMO, she met the love of her life, Donald E. Moody of Cumberland and they were married in 1960. Betty taught Kindergarten and First Grade in the Portland and Falmouth school districts until having children. Once her children were in school, she was a substitute teacher for many years to follow. She was also a Girl Scout Leader and a member of AAUW. Betty was an avid gardener, loved spending time with her family, cooking, and playing cards. She cherished holidays with her family – especially Christmas. One of her favorite past times was to read home design magazines, which lead her to design two of her own houses. Betty enjoyed gambling and went on many trips to Las Vegas with husband Don, and then later to Foxwoods and Oxford Casino with dear friends Linda Tobey, David B. Moody, Jr., and Sandra Moody.
Although Falmouth was always home to “Betty Lou”, she followed Don’s career and lived all over New England and as far south as Tennessee.
Betty is survived by her two daughters, Debra Hastings and husband William of Falmouth, and Lori Holmes and husband Mark of Cumberland; grandchildren Emily Seaver, Matthew Hastings, Sarah Holmes, and Erin Holmes; foster-brother Murray Spruce of Bolivia, NC; sister-in-law Corrie Zacharias of Falmouth; and many nieces and nephews. Betty is predeceased by her husband Donald Moody; brother Peter Zacharias; brother-in-law David B. Moody, Jr. and wife Sandra; brother-in-law Douglas Moody; and her beloved brown hound “Zach von Woofus”.
Friends and family are invited to visit on Saturday, March 4 at Lindquist Funeral Home at 10 am followed by a short service to honor Betty’s life at 11 am. A celebration of Betty’s life will continue at a location to be announced during the service.
A Spring burial will be held for family at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to Maine Cancer Foundation, 170 US Route 1, Falmouth Maine 04105. Include a note to let them know the gift is in memory of Betty Moody. Online donations can be made at www.mainecancer.org.
