Born October 17, 1944 in Dover Foxcroft, the son of Harold Robert Rees and Maude Doris Rees of Sangerville, Maine. Gary was a champion cross-country runner and golfer in high school. He graduated Husson College, Class of 1968.
Gary was a member of the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) and throughout his life he served as the Golf Pro for several Golf Courses in Maine, including Bangor Municipal, Twin Falls, Guilford, Val Halla, The Woodlands, Freeport and Dexter Country Clubs. Better known as "Coach", Gary had a gift for giving golf lessons and teaching the love of the game, and for supporting Junior golf programs, as well as coaching high school golf teams for many years, winning nine State Championship titles; six for Greely High School, three for Dexter High School. Gary always said it was the teams that won these matches, and he was so proud of each and every team member he coached over the years. His teams had 344 wins, giving him the Coach's gift of an 87% chance at winning a match.
Gary was inducted into the Maine Golf Hall of fame, in 2004 and served as Executive Director of the program for 15 years. Golf was his passion and he shared that with everyone he met.
Gary was preceded by his parents, Harold and Maude Rees. Brothers Eugene, Harold Jr., and Kim Rees. He is survived by his beloved wife, Toni Rees, daughter Penny Pomeroy and her husband Tim, grandson Ryan Pomeroy and his wife Jillian, and two great grand daughters Sophia and Savannah.
A celebration of life will be held at a future date.
