Yarmouth – Gertrude Marie (Hight) Beckwith lost a valiant brief battle with cancer on December 17, 2010. “Chinky” was born in Portland on July 24, 1928 to Donald and Florence (Tuttle) Hight. Because they died, she became a ward of Alvah and Annie Kent and attended North Yarmouth schools.
In 1948, she married Carlton Beckwith and moved to the farm. In 1952, they built their house on the Yarmouth side, now 17 Beckwith Street. She worked briefly at the sardine factory and the rug guild; but, mostly, on the farm, finishing her last season in October 2010. Her house was the coffee shop/snack bar for everyone on the farm. For six decades, she baked her famous whoopie pies and other treats. Nick and Chinky took only one vacation to Florida, always content at home except for shopping on Fridays. She will be missed by many because she loved everyone.
She is survived by her son, Donald E. Beckwith, and her daughter, Barbara A. Salmon, both of Beckwith Street in Yarmouth; grandson Christopher A. and Alicia Beckwith and their children, Madeline P. and Grady R. of Windham; granddaughter April L. and Sam Whitener of Portland; granddaughter Stephanie M. Salmon and fiancé Nick Hutchins of Gray and grandson Nicholas J. Salmon. She was predeceased by her husband Carton E. Beckwith; her son Richard A. Beckwith and her brother Donald G. Hight.
The family will have a private celebration on the farm in the spring. Arrangements are by Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth, ME 04096. Please visit www.lindquistfuneralhome.com to share your condolences, memories and tributes with the Beckwith Family.
