Known by friends and family, as “Jim” or “Jamie,” he is survived by his wife Nancy F. Saunders. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, July 29, 2017. He is also survived by three brothers: Wilford of Pipersville, PA; Joe of Durham, ME; Bradley of Rochester, NY; two sisters, Sally Johnston of Baltimore, MD and Sissy Schultz of Kenmore, Washington; and many nieces and nephews. Jim was predeceased by his father, James C. Saunders, his mother, Grace Hawkins Saunders, and stepmother, Barbara Rising Saunders.
Jim was born in Easton, Maryland on November 30, 1935. Following graduation from North Yarmouth Academy in 1954, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps for two years where he was stationed at Cherry Point Air Station in North Carolina. He then went on to attend and graduated from the University of Maine in Orono, in 1960.
Jim worked as a reporter for the Worcester Telegram and Gazette as a general assignment reporter before returning to Portland to accept a position with the Portland Press Herald and Evening Express. His final working years were spent as a reporter and photographer for the Falmouth Forecaster where he was one of its earliest employees.
Jim had a lifelong love for boats, especially wooden boats and spent many enjoyable outings with Nancy in their Lightning sailboat named “Quickstep”. After Jim retired, he volunteered at HART (Homeless Animal Rescue Team), Cumberland, Maine where he truly enjoyed his time with the cats and other volunteers and was fortunate to have adopted “Walter”, his beloved cat.
Jim was a kind, gentle person, always thinking of others before himself. Never speaking ill of anyone.
A special Thank You to the staff at Brentwood Manor for their compassionate care during Jim’s stay.
There is no visitation scheduled. Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial graveside service on Saturday September 23, 2017 at 11:00 am in the Riverside Cemetery Yarmouth, Maine.
