FREEPORT – Paul E. Smith Jr., PJ, to friends and family, died unexpectedly July 19 at his home, six days after his 27th birthday.
Paul was born on July 13, 1990 the son of Paul E. and Candace R. Smith. A Portland native, PJ moved to Freeport with his family at a young age and attended Freeport schools, graduating from Freeport High School in 2008. A gifted singer, PJ performed with a number of punk-rock bands while in his teens and early 20s. His love of music inspired him to undertake a school project that required him to organize a live concert that featured nearly a half-dozen bands from points far and near. Several local bands are planning to stage their own concert in the near future to assist the family with funeral costs.
In 2015 and 2016, PJ worked in the deli at Bow Street Market where he enjoyed serving and meeting the public. His passions, in addition to music, included baseball in general and the Red Sox in particular. His beloved dog, Mookie, a Chihuahua-Boston terrier mix, was named after Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Frank B. (Flora) Smith of Dallas, Texas, and Jim (Julie) Morreale of Utah; two sisters, Shelley D. (Craig) Moreshead of Barrington, N.H., and Julia Morreale of Sarasota, Fla.; two uncles, Christopher (Cathy) Smith of Naples, Fla., and Uncle Lorence White, an Aunt Lynda Ahmed, and Great Aunt Arlene Harris.
A remembrance service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Lindquist Funeral Home, 1 Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth.
