

Freeport, ME - Richard L. Browning, Jr. (Tim), 75, passed away on Oct. 8, 2011 from complications of prostate cancer. He was born on May 29, 1936 and was a native of Euclid, OH. He was the son of the late Richard L. Browning and Charlotte Tracy Browning. Tim was a graduate of the Case Institute of Technology with a major in electrical engineering. Upon graduation he served for 3 years in the Navy, was a graduate of their officer’s candidate school in Newport, RI and among other places was stationed at the US Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, he returned to OH and for more than 20 yrs. was the president of his family’s business, Victor R. Browning & Co., Inc, in Willoughby, OH until they closed in 1990. They designed and built overhead industrial cranes. After spending a year taking horticulture courses at Ohio State University, Tim moved to Freeport, ME in 1996 and continued taking horticulture courses at Southern ME Technical College with the idea of pursuing his true love – growing things. He opened his successful greenhouse business, Plants Plus, in the fall of 1997. Sadly, Tim suffered a major stroke in Nov., 1999 but was able to participate in the business until it closed in the fall of 2005. In addition to growing things, Tim had many interests including music, going to art museums, skiing, riding and canoeing to name a few. He particularly enjoyed the times he spent at his family’s cabin in Algonquin Park in northern Ontario, CA. He also served as president of the lake leaseholders association there for several years.
Besides his wife, Sally Savage, he leaves his children Christopher Browning, of Portland, OR and Victoria Browning of Seattle, WA and 3 step children, Beth Savage of Oakland, CA, Jeff Savage of Plano, TX and Becky Savage and her husband, Sun Park of Essex, VT. He also leaves his brother Ned Browning of Mystic, CT, cousins Hope Hungerford of Cleveland and Kit and Margaret Gibson of Solon, OH; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Anne Browning of Portland, ME. Burial will take place on Fri., Oct. 21st at 2:00 at the Burr Cemetery in Freeport, ME and a remembrance gathering will take place at 11:00 am on Sat., Oct. 22 in the Meeting Room of the Freeport Community Library.
