He was born in Presque Isle on Dec. 13, 1926, the son of Isiah Wood and Iva Thomas Wood, one of 11 children. Richard graduated from high school in Presque Isle and enlisted in the U.S. Army. He would later enroll in and spend two years at the University of Maine. Richard married the former Vivian Hill and they would make their home in Yarmouth.
Richard was a true aviation lover; Cessna and Piper small planes were his passions, as well as building and flying his own planes. Richard was a skilled aviation mechanic, truck mechanic and salesman. He also worked for Bodwell Motors for more than 10 years. Richard loved Maine and was passionate about hunting and fly fishing and also his family. Many a brook trout and salmon made a visit to his side.
Richard is survived by his wife Vivian Hill; nephew and caregiver, Martin T. Wood, and several other nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by brother, Arnold C. “Woody” Wood and several other siblings.
Visitation Wednesday Nov, 30 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Lindquist Funeral Home, 1 Mayberry Lane, in Yarmouth. Committal service Dec. 1 at 11 a.m. at Brooklawn Memorial Park, 2002 Congress St. in Portland.
