1/26/1932 – 2/17/2016
Robert was born in Annapolis, MD, the son of Captain Edward C. Craig, USN, and Helen Louis Sanderson. He attended Deerfield Academy and Yale University before entering the United States Marine Corps.
After his four year career in the Marine Corps, his career consisted of managing a bank trust department and then providing trust and investment services at HM Payson and Co, often for several generations of the same families, many of whom were not only customers but good friends. During his career he also taught at the Williams College School of Banking, before retirement at age seventy.
Staying busy in retirement was never a problem. Rob, as he was referred to by friends and family, and his wife Nancy were fortunate to live close by their three sons, their families, and four grandchildren. They loved to travel and have enjoyed visiting most of the Caribbean islands, England, France, Switzerland, Austria, Scotland, Hawaii, Costa Rica, and Baja, Mexico. Such trips usually involved activities such as sailing, golfing, tennis, skiing, and snorkeling.
Rob always had a passion for the outdoors. He enjoyed pheasant and woodcock hunting with his prized German short haired Pfeffer, sailing in Casco Bay, and especially fly fishing. Early family vacations were often centered around the outdoors. From trout fishing at Sherman Camps on Big Lyford Pond and the Megantic Club in Coburn Gore to camping trips with his three sons to fish the Magalloway River and Parmachenee Lake. Rob caught numerous Atlantic salmon on the Restigouche River, salmon and brook trout on Kennebago Lake, and striped bass from his dock at his home in Cumberland Foreside. Rob was a master with the rod.
Rob was predeceased by his parents; his eldest son, Rob Jr; and, granddaughter Katie. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Nancy B. Craig; son Charles E. and wife Kate Healy; son Christopher C. and wife Carson; daughter-in-law Wendy; his grandchildren Will, Neil, Emilie and new grandchildren, Emily and Seamus Healy; his sister, Jean C. Howe of South Carolina; and his loyal dog Gundy and cat Tasha. We love and miss Rob, but know that he is at peace.
There will be a gathering for family and friends at 3:00 PM on Friday, February 26th at the Portland Country Club. A private family burial will follow in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Maine Audubon, HART or Maine Medical Center Development Fund.
Arrangements are by Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth, Maine 04096.
