Fr. John B. Clermont, O.F.M. Cap.

The Capuchin Franciscan friars of the Province of St. Mary mourn the death of Father John B. Clermont, O.F.M. Cap., who passed from this life on October 23, 2017 at the Friary of St. Clare, Yonkers, NY at the age of 90. Fr. John was born on April 8, 1927 in Yonkers NY. He attended Sacred Heat Grade School, Yonkers NY [1933-41] and St. Mary Seraphicate, Garrison NY [1941-1945]. He was invested as a Capuchin Franciscan in Huntington, IN on July 11, 1945; professed perpetual vows on July 12, 1949 and was ordained to the priesthood at Sacred Heart Church, Yonkers NY on June 27, 1953. For the next 15 years Fr. John ministered as teacher, librarian and graduate student. He attended the Capuchin University of America, Washington DC during summers majoring in Economics and Political Science [1954-1959] and received his Master’s degree [1956] and later his Doctorate in Economics [1966]. Father taught Speech at St. Mary Seminary, Garrison NY [1956-57]; Theodicy, Ethics and Social Sciences at St. Anthony Friary, Hudson NH [1957-69] where he also served as the friary librarian. Prior to assuming positions ministering in the Spanish-speaking apostolate, Fr. John began his study of the Spanish language in Cuernavaca, Mexico [1970-71] and Puerto Rico [1971-1972]. He would later serve as an assistant pastor at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, Manhattan NY [1971-1972]; Missionary in San Marcos de Ocotepeque, Honduras [1972-1976]; and Pastor and Guardian of Our Lady of Sorrows [1976-1981]. In 1982, Fr. John was appointed a parochial assistant at St. Patrick Cathedral, New York City [1982-1991] and later Vice Chancellor [1991-1995]. Following a sabbatical in 1997, Father returned to Honduras and ministered as an assistant pastor until 2004. Father served as a parochial vicar at St. John the Baptist Church, Manhattan NY [2004-2014] until he retired at our senior friar residence St. Clare Friary, Yonkers NY on February 4, 2014. On April 8, 2017, Father John celebrated his 90th Birthday in the presence of his family, friends and friars at Sacred Heart Friary, Yonkers NY. Fr. John was survived by his cousins Patricia Jordan and Carole Thomasen along with many supportive friends. Viewing will be held at St. Clare Friary, 110 Shonnard Place, Yonkers, NY 10703 on Friday, October 27, 2017 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, October 28, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 110 Shonnard Place, Yonkers, NY 10703.
