

Joan was born in Yonkers, NY on August 14, 1929 to Edward and Ursula Smith. She was a graduate of Gorton High School, Barbizon School of Modeling and Westchester School for Secretaries.
In July of 1953, Joan married Mario DePalma, the love of her life.
She is survived by Mario, children Joan (Denis) Jones of Elmsford, NY; Fredric (Susan) of Garrison, NY; David (Nancy) of Jacksonville, FL; Raymond (Donna) of Ridgefield, CT; Lauren (daughter-in-law) of Danbury CT; Christopher (Nicole) of Danbury, CT and Timothy (Lori) of Danbury, CT. Joan is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by sons Jeffrey and Gregory DePalma.
Joan loved knitting, and her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren treasure blankets she has knitted for them over the years. She also belonged to a group that would knit Prayer Shawls. Joan loved word search puzzles and would challenge her family to see who would finish first. She loved to travel with Mario, having traveled to Europe several times.
Joan worked for Sacred Heart parish in Yonkers as bookkeeper and receptionist for 38 years, retiring in 2014. She was also involved in many church activities such as a Lector at Sunday Mass or a Bingo Volunteer to name a few. In 2008, Joan gained Affiliation with the Capuchin Franciscan Friars, Province of Saint Mary’s; recognizing her work for the church over the years.
She and Mario moved to Newtown, CT in 2014, and later, to Danbury, CT.
Visitation will be Monday, April 10 from 4-8PM at Whalen Ball Funeral Home, 168 Park Ave, Yonkers. Funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, April 11, at the Monastery Church of the Sacred Heart , 110 Shonnard Pl, Yonkers, at 9:30am. Interment will follow at Kensico Cemetery, Valhalla, NY.
