Louise was an orphan who made every dear friend her “family.” When she had to select a sir name, she chose Person because she believed, “Everyone is a person who has value and dignity.” And she spent a lifetime embodying that belief! She was a dedicated worker in the St. John’s Hospital Kitchen for 37 years. She taught swimming and then later continued as a volunteer for decades at the YWCA and later, the YMCA. Thanks to Miss Louise, or LuLu, many children’s lives were enriched by a love of swimming and others were spared the fear of water for the rest of their lives. During her free time, she did synchronized swimming. She also enjoyed Hawaiian dancing and performed for many years at community events and nursing homes. In 2000, she began a 20-year ministry of volunteer service at St. Joseph’s Nursing Home. Thanks to Louise, no patient’s needs went unnoticed, no wheelchair was left idle, all calendars were updated, all who thought they were forgotten had names, a holiday visitor, and a friend. A long-time parishioner of St. John’s Episcopal Church in South Yonkers, Louise valued her faith and believed that it ought to be lived in service to her community. And so it was that Louise Person was always doing for others, without the need for attention or thanks. She had a strong devotion to Jesus and to the Blessed Mother, and she is now with them, at peace. Visiting hours will be at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home on Saturday 2-5pm. Final Disposition is private.
