Mary D. (Doyle) Galle entered into eternal rest on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at St. Frances Cabrini Nursing Home in Dobbs Ferry, New York. She was a parishioner of the Monastery Church of the Sacred Heart in Yonkers, New York. Mary was born April 12, 1919 in Yonkers to Peter and Margaret Doyle. As a lifelong Yonkers resident she was educated at St. Joseph’s Grade School, and Yonkers High School. On November 23, 1940 she married Francis J. Galle, who predeceased her on June 15, 1966. Mary is survived by her children, Francis (Harriet) of Queensbury, New York, Denis of Yonkers, Regina Montone, also of Yonkers, and Patricia Galle-Mohammed (Keith) of Ossining, New York. She is also survived by her brother Lawrence Doyle, of Pilot Mountain, North Carolina. She was predeceased by her sisters Dorothy Castle, Helen Hamilton, Rose Doyle, Jeanette Jordan, and her brothers Francis, Thomas, James and William. She was also predeceased by her son-in-law Stephen Montone and her step daughter Maryann Nagle (nee Galle). She had a great love for her grandchildren, Nanette (Chris) Leahy of Evergreen, Colorado, Valerie (Charles) Telfair of Sarasota, Florida, June (Scott) Jeckel of Queensbury, New York, Frank Jr. (Liz) of North Creek, New York, Denise and Joseph (Margarita) Villara of Yonkers, and Kevin Mohammed of Ossining. Mrs. Galle is also survived by 12 great grandchildren. In her fifties and sixties, Mary discovered that besides being a great wife and mother, she had an additional calling to become a volunteer for many different organizations. She was North Yonkers Chairperson for the March of Dimes, and was instrumental in founding the Mothers and Sisters Guild at Sacred Heart Grade School. As her children grew she increased her volunteer efforts, joining the Capuchin Auxiliary at Sacred Heart Church, and eventually serving as President of the organization for many years. She also served as President of the St. Joseph’s Medical Center Ladies Auxiliary, President of the Queens Daughter Day Care Auxiliary, President of the Guardian Angel Chapel Fund Auxiliary in Wassaic, New York, and Treasurer of the local chapter for the Sisters of Charity Auxiliary. She was also actively involved at Yonkers General Hospital and the Yonkers Birthright Program. Her proudest effort was when a young Capuchin priest stationed in Honduras called Mary and told her of a young boy who needed life saving surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Mary immediately began to organize a grand fundraising effort, from which the proceeds were used to facilitate transportation, care, and rehabilitation of the young man at the Mayo Clinic. Many of these organizations would attempt to honor Mary, but being a woman of great humility; she would decline these honors, and be completely satisfied with a simple “Thank You”. She continued to serve these organizations until she was well into her seventies. In addition to her many humanitarian efforts, Mary was a strong presence in the lives of her family and friends. She is also survived by many devoted nieces and nephews. Mrs. Galle also enjoyed traveling, and would share her photos stories of her trips to Hawaii, Ireland, the Canary Islands, the Bahamas, Jamaica and the Virgin Islands. She especially enjoyed summers at her son Denis’ summer residence in Dutchess County, where she would entertain her grandchildren, family and friends. Visiting hours will be at the Whalen & Ball Funeral Home on Sunday 7-9 PM and Monday 2-4 & 7-9 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial in Sacred Heart Church on Tuesday February 15th at 11 AM.
