
Mary C. West (nee Drain), a lifelong Yonkers resident, died on Thursday May 26, 2011 at St. Cabrini Nursing Home in Dobbs Ferry. She was 96 years old. She was born on July 7, 1914 to John and Helen Fennell Drain in Yonkers where she was raised and educated. She graduated from St. Joseph Grade School and attended Commerce High School. Mrs. West was a longtime parishioner of Sacred Heart Church. She was a member of the Ladies Guild of Our Lady of the Rosary Church, a member of the Habershaw Club and a longtime resident of Monastery Manor and a past president of their Tenant’s Association. She married her loving husband, Alexander West in August 1944 at St. Joseph Church in Yonkers. Mr. West died on May 23, 1977. Survivors include one son, Alexander West of White Plains, three daughters, Nancy McGowan of Basehor, Kansas, Kathleen Pike of Levittown, L.I. and Maryellen Dennison of Plattekill, N.Y., one brother, John Drain of Poughkeepsie and two sisters, Theresa Decker of Charleston, R.I. and Lorraine O’Brien of Shenorock, N.Y. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by a son, John West, two brothers, William and James Drain and one sister, Gertrude Seman. Visiting hours will be at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home on Monday 2-4 & 7-9 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Sacred Heart Church on Tuesday May 31st at 11 AM. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Contributions in her memory may be made to either the Alzheimer’s Association, the Susan G. Coleman Cancer Foundation or Pemphigus & Pemphigoid Association.
