

Rosemary Kennedy Whalen, a lifelong Yonkers resident, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2015, two weeks after her 98th birthday. She was born August 4, 1917 to James and Mary Kiernan Kennedy in Yonkers and graduated from the College of Mount Saint Vincent in 1938. She married Charles Whalen on October 10, 1942 at Saint Joseph’s Church. Charlie predeceased her in 1977. Rosemary is survived by her daughters Patricia Whalen Huffield of Yorktown and MaryBeth Whalen of Yonkers, granddaughter Meaghan Huffield (Rob) Capellini and great-grandchildren Ryan, Celeste, and Joseph Capellini of Mahopac, and nephew William Kennedy of Colorado. She was predeceased by her brother William Kennedy and her son-in-law Richard. Rosemary taught at Saint Joseph’s School for many years and was very involved in promoting Special Education. She served as a member of the Committee for Special Education of the Yonkers Public School district early in those efforts. She was an officer of the Yonkers League/WARC until her late eighties when she retired due to failing eyesight. Visiting hours will be at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home on Monday 2-4 & 7-9pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Sacred Heart Church on Tuesday August 25th at 11am. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Yonkers League/ARC would be appreciated.
