Clair Eugene Gotwalt, a devoted husband and loving father passed away on December 9, 2016 in DeLand Florida. He was born in York, Pennsylvania on November 26, 1929 to his late parents Harold and Mamie Gotwalt. He was a loving brother to the late Charles Edward Gotwalt and spent time with Charles and his family in York, Pennsylvania over the years. Clair served in the US Army prior to meeting his loving wife Madelyn, together they had two sons and were married 51 years at her passing in 2006. Clair and his family had lived in York, Pennsylvania; Boston, Massachusetts and Portsmouth, Rhode Island. He had a successful 40 year career as a Field Service Engineering Supervisor for the Naval Underwater Systems Center (NUSC) in Newport, Rhode Island. He was widely respected for his expertise and dedication as a civilian to the US Navy. Clair was a man of diverse passions, among them he had a love of Amateur Radio. He was a member of the Amateur Radio Club and maintained friendships with fellow Ham Radio Operators around the world over the years. He was not afraid to pursue difficult projects, one of them was converting the second floor of his Rhode Island home into bedroom suites for this two boys David and Steven. He was very involved in his church community and served on the Advisory Board of Calvary United Methodist Church in Middletown, Rhode Island. He devoted his time and talents to the board and served in various voluntary positions and charitable events. Traveling held a special place in his heart. He traveled extensively for his job, but cherished the moments when he traveled with his family. Among their many trips the highlight of all trips was to Florida and Hawaii. Later in life he was involved with trailer camping, he and Madelyn traveled all around the country. KOA Campgrounds were their second homes and they enjoyed their times going to new and exciting places. Clair settled into retirement life with Madelyn in DeLand Florida. They enjoyed their retirement years in The Oaks Community of DeLand Florida with their retiree friends. Clair was involved with the Radio Relay Club of DeLand Florida where he was involved with Emergency Response Coordination efforts. He leaves behind two proud sons, David and Steven, four grandchildren Stephanie, Melanie, Adam and Tanner and three great grandchildren Elizabeth, Ian and Brady. There is a memorial service being held at Mount Rose Cemetery in York, Pennsylvania on 6/23/2023 at 9:30am. Those whom would like to attend should meet promptly for the lineup procession at the main entrance of Mount Rose Cemetery, 1502 Mount Rose Ave at 9:15am. Clair was a beacon of light in the lives of all who knew him. His spirit will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. His life and legacy will continue to be celebrated, just as he would have wanted.
