Heidi was born October 15, 1968 in Charleston, West Virginia to Hugh and Nancy Hetzer and embraced life with a contagious zest. By the age of 10, Heidi had lived in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Minnesota, West Virginia, California, back to Minnesota and then back to California where she resided since 1978. As a child Heidi enjoyed catching fire flies, riding bikes, playing the guitar, singing and dancing to loud music, going to summer church camps, painting, and traveling. Heidi was well traveled and had visited 46 of the 50 states. As an adult, Heidi loved cooking, spending time with friends and family, teaching, being with her dogs, and traveling. She loved to travel abroad and spent time in Ireland, Spain, France, Australia, and Barbados. Her goal was to retire in Portugal. She loved animals since she was a small child, cats and dogs alike. In fact, she was never without a dog by her side. She attended schools in San Bernardino and graduated from Cajon High School in 1986. After high school, she worked at Payless shoes, hence her love of shoes. She then worked at Hudson Goodman Jewelers for a few years, spoiling her family with gifts of jewelry. In 1992, she became the manager and the face of The Mail Stop, a business owned by John and Keeli. One of Heidi’s favorite jobs was working an ale stand at the Renaissance Faire where she met many of her lifelong friends. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in 1998 from Chapman University and in 2002 she became an elementary teacher at Simpson Elementary in Rialto. In 2004, Heidi fulfilled a lifelong dream and became a mother to Anthony. She earned her Master of Arts in Teaching in 2005 and transferred to Rialto Middle School where she taught for the remainder of her career.
She is predeceased by her mother, Nanci Keeling, and is survived by her son, Anthony Buchanan; father, Hugh Hetzer and his wife Shirley; sister, Keeli Mazich and her husband John; niece Amanda Mazich, nephew, Aaron Mazich and his wife Erin; niece, Kayla Martindale and her husband Joshua; nephew, Kristopher Mazich; niece, Joelle Looysen and her husband Brock; grandnephews: Brayden and Mason Martindale; and her grandniece: Kailyn Looysen.
