Steven Vernon Dorries was born to father Alvin Vernon (Mary) Dorries of Huntington Beach, CA and mother Beryl (Dr. Robert) Bailey of Tucson AZ, who all precede him in death. He is survived by his son Steven Kennon (Anna) Dorries of Prescott, AZ; sisters Diane (Mario) Reyes and Rhonda (Mark) Hjelm of Huntington Beach, CA; brothers Paul Bailey and Matthew Bailey (deceased); and former wives and lifelong friends Judy Turetzky of Tucson, AZ and Beatrice Dorries of Yuma, AZ. There are also numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Steve was proud of his Arizona heritage. Both of his grandmothers, Bertha Wien Moody Marsh and Edna Vail Dorries, have been authenticated and certified as Arizona pioneers by the Arizona Historical Society. Mrs. Marsh lived at the historic Arizona Pioneer's Home in Prescott, which is reserved solely for those who hold such an honor. He was proud that his grandfather Kennon "Doc" Dorries worked for the Yuma County Water District, and later the Yuma Main St. Water Treatment Plant. He was proud of his father's military service. A plaque for Al's service in the United States Navy is displayed at the Yuma Armed Forces Park, 281 Gila St. But Steve was most especially proud of his son Stever, who along with his beautiful wife Anna have made a truly loving and happy home together in Prescott.
Steve was born in Yuma, graduated from Yuma High School and worked for the City of Yuma, where from 1981 to 2008 he was with the Water Department, working at the Yuma Main St. Water Plant like his granddad. He retired as the department's Utilities Inventory Specialist. During those 27 years he made many friendships with City co-workers, vendors and customers.
Steve was one of the original founders and card carrying members of the local Y.V.D.A. He loved the desert, hunting, shooting, and making big camp fires. Most recently, he was a member of the N.R.A., and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. His "Grab-it" toy collection skills and donations of hundreds of them to charitable organizations will never be surpassed.
Steve will be greatly missed by his family and so many friends. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Nov 5th, 2013, 10:30 AM, at Johnson Mortuary/Chapel, 1415 S. 1st Ave, in Yuma. A time will be given during the service for those of you who would like to share any special memories you may have. An after-service gathering will be held at the Fraternal Order of Eagles, 225 S. 1st Ave, Yuma, to continue the sharing of stories and laughter. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Fraternal Order of Eagles' many charitable endeavors, in Steve's name.
