Just finished reading the guest book entries, and want to thank all of you for your wonderful rememberances!  As his sister-my memories are more from his babyhood to grown up years and the Yuma years are more from Buster's stories, which some we heard so many times, my brother, Bob would start holding up the number of fingers, which Buster recently told them.  Buster's essence will always remain in our memories and looking forward to seeing him again when I go beyond this life too!

Upon hearing of our loss, I was at first stunned, then very saddened. My family and I were close to Buster (AKA) "Santa", My family and I will miss him dearly. I will always remember the wonderful time and memories I had working with Buster at the Yuma Station. To Gaye, his wonderful wife, and to his family, our deepest condolences. Rest in peace my friend and fellow Border Patrol Agent.



We all lost a truly unique person on Independence Day.

As David said in his Dad's obituary Buster Hummel did go out on a firecracker but he came in on a rocket, a bottle rocket.  I worked with Buster from his first week in the Border Patrol in 1976 until my retirement in 2001 and he has been a close friend for almost 40 years.  The public knows very little about how vast a contribution he made to our community.

His devotion to duty is legend and his “Buster Clusters” are renowned.  Buster's ability to catch the most complicated, difficult smuggling and fraud cases was truly astounding.  His willingness to frequently work triple shifts and then to continuing working straight through his next shift the following day to handle his cases and help rescue those stranded in the desert was an example that few could follow.

From a single ‘snap' pistol shot over his shoulder to defend himself from an attacker who had snuck up behind him and was trying to smash his skull while Buster was struggling to arrest a robber to helping catch four pickups loaded with 3,000 pounds of marijuana AFTER the end of his scheduled work shift to helping rescue dozens, if not hundreds, of people crossing the desert, Buster's career in the Border Patrol was truly unique.

Buster's volunteer work in our community went far beyond being “Mr. Fix it” for the Kofa band and “Santa Claus” for hundreds of children for many years.  How many retirees would volunteer to dress up as “Santa Claus” to deliver Christmas dinner to agents living at Forward Operating Base ‘Grip', deep in the Goldwater Training Range?  As a colleague said last week, “Buster was a really unique man among men and after he was born God broke the mold.”

Perhaps Buster was able to have such a unique career because of the love and support of his beloved wife Gaye.

But Buster's passing raises a serious question for the Border Patrol.  Who will teach new agents to shot bottle rockets under their academy classmates dorm room doors in the wee hours of New Years day as Buster did to his classmates?

Sorry about your loss. I wish we would have been in better contact over the years. I always enjoyed Uncle Buster's stories, and his hatred for paperwork.

Buster and Gaye are my marital heros.  In this world, it is rare for folks to make a marriage work for so many years and still love each other dearly.  What a great fella--he always was.  

They were the first "sweethearts" I knew in High school---even if Buster DID go to HILLTOP HIGH while Gaye and I went to Chula Vista High!  

Thanks Buster for getting Gaye and I connected again.  Enjoy heaven and we will see you there!

The world has a lost a caring and decent person but we all have a guardian angel looking over all of us now. 

I will never forget driving Buster and Jerry Erxleben to the Campo De Ratones (Border Patrol Camp) in 2012. Buster and Jerry had a ball visiting with all the guys and vice versa. It is hard to believe they are both gone now. Buster was so appreciative that he cried when I dropped him off at his house. He was an awesome person and he made an awesome Santa Claus too! I love you and miss you and will not forget you.

Dear Gaye and David, 
     Although miles separated us and visits were sparse, I will always fondly remember Buster for his great sense of humor, his compassion for people, and his caring thoughts and comments when Herb died. The visit where all the family got together in California was a wonderful family reunion full of great fun memories with you all. I pray God's peace in your lives and know that Buster will have many rewards in Heaven for his compassion here on earth. Psalm's 48: God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, thought the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof; here is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the Holy place of the tabernacles of the most High; God is in the midst of her; she shall  not be moved; God will help her, and that right early. ...Be still and know that I am God... The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge, Selah.

God threw away the mold when he created Buster Hummel. He was one of a kind. I will always remember the fun times we had working together as Border Patrol Agents at the old Yuma Border Patrol station that was on First Street. Buster was one of the most hardest working, dedicated and conscientious BPA I ever worked with.

I will never forget just before I retired in 2006, Buster, Joe Dunn (Pilot) and I flew Christmas dinner out to the men and women that were assigned to Camp Grip. The BPA's were so appreciative of the meal but it was Buster that stole the show. He was dressed up in his Santa suit and the BPA's lit up like candles when they saw Buster.

Thank you for being a good friend and I was fortunate to "ride the river" with you. I will always cherish my memories of you.

Gaye and David,

I will never forget taking Buster and Jerry Erxleben out to the "Campo De Ratones" on steak night. All the retired Border Patrol guys were thrilled to see Buster and Jerry. They both had a ball talking with the guys, sharing stories, and enjoying those good steaks. I will never forget Buster was so appreciative for me driving him out to the camp that he cried. Buster was a good person and he made an awesome Santa for the Border Patrol Christmas activities. I will miss him but I know he is one of our guardian angels looking out for all of us.

Buster will always be remembered for his contagious smile. He was a great man and role model.
