Colonel William (Bill) D. Neal, Jr. (Army, MI, Ret) began his interesting and amazing life in Baltimore, Maryland on November 3, 1918, born to William Delmar Neal, Sr. and Mary Etta Wright Neal. Like the good soldier, he fought long and hard, but lost his last battle and went home with the angels on January 22, 2016.
After graduating from high school and at a flip of a coin, Bill and his friend joined the Army. He went in as a private and after basic training was sent on his first assignment to Hawaii. He was very proud of his first promotion to private first class. After serving his required enlistment in Hawaii, Bill returned to the civilian life. Bill was called back into service in April of 1941. Bill served in the European command, returning to the states after the end of World War II. Bill decided to stay in the service of his country. He was with the Army Intelligence Corp for most of his military career. Bill's last assignment was Commander of the 430th MI Det. in Germany. He chose to retire in 1969. Bill was a "mustang", therefore was able to see both sides of the coin between the enlisted and military ranks. He was respected by both groups. Bill was often asked how long he served his country and his reply would be, "Thirty years, nine months,18 days, 2 1/2 hours."
During Bill’s time in the service he earned his BS degree from the University of Maryland. He was a student of life and continued his education throughout. A book was his constant companion. When Bill retired, he kept himself busy by volunteering in Walla Walla, Washington as a scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America as well as running a Boy Scout camp during the summer months. He also served as a PTA President for a Catholic high school.
Upon complete retirement, Bill enjoyed his travels in the motor home with his wife, Carol, seeing the country that he dearly loved. He always said he had seen more of foreign countries than his own, so he wanted to see as much of the US as he could. Bill so enjoyed taking side trips off the freeways if he saw a sign that sounded interesting to him. He traveled many back roads.
Bill was devoted to his family and made every effort to ensure their well-being.
Bill, like so many of his generation, was a great storyteller. Many friends would come to visit just to hear another story. He had such an amazing and incredible sense of humor. His voice has been silenced, but his stories will live on.
He lost his mother early in life. He was predeceased by his father, and only brother, John (Pete) R. Neal, and a daughter, Susan. He is survived by his wife, Carol D. Neal, his son William D. Neal III (Karen), two grandsons, Michael Pat Neal (Mariana), Jacob A. Neal, two beloved granddaughters, Nicole and Lisa Bradin, one great grandson, Lucius Neal, several nieces and nephews, and one special niece Susan Valenza (Joseph).
The family would like to thank Dr. Awar (Young Hearts of Yuma) and Dr. Dorothy Wong for all of their loving care of Bill and helping to extend his life. They would like also to thank Monica Perez for her patience, love and the songs she sang to him. He always looked forward to seeing her. Also, Vanessa (Nessie) Ramirez for the exceptional care and love shown to him.
A memorial will be held at a later date in Portland, Oregon.
Bill will be greatly missed by all that had the pleasure of knowing him. There is a great void, but Bill will live in the hearts that loved him. Go with God and rest in peace.
