Shih was born in Taiwan on July 28, 1946. After graduating high school and a stint in the air force, he worked as a deckhand, which took him all over the world. During a return trip home, he would meet his wife, Jean. They got married in 1985 and moved to the United States together in 1987, where they would raise their two children.
Disciplined and hard-working, Shih started in the restaurant business washing dishes. With keen observation and a willingness to learn, he climbed his way up to become a chef. Despite some roadblocks, he eventually settled down in the Permian Basin, where he became the proprietor of Kuo’s Chinese Restaurant from 2002.
Complementing his love of travel, Shih enjoyed telling stories, and with his wealth of experiences he always had a story to tell. He was something of a gourmet, especially when it came to seafood. He often wore a wristwatch, as he valued being on time and getting things done.
Shih Yih Hsu is preceded in death by his father, mother, and older brother. He is survived by his wife, Jean, and his sons, Alan and Andy. Funeral service will be held on June 26, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Blvd., Austin, Texas.
