Barry Louis Shemin respected, admired, and well-liked by many passed away at age 78 on Wednesday, June 9, 2021 after a long illness. Born in Brooklyn, New York on December 17, 1943 to loving parents, Henry and Bessie Shemin, Barry loved being with family and dear friends and had a great sense of humor. He was a life-long learner, mentor, and teacher, and an intellectual at heart. His goal was to help other people reach their goal. He enjoyed tennis, cycling, bridge, photography, travel, the beaches at the Cape and Rhode Island, sailing, and professional sports teams. He had an excellent ear for music and lyrics, and analyzed many symphonies. He regularly attended museums and music and theater performances. Barry attended Brown University and graduated magna cum laude in 1963 and was a member of Sigma Xi (the scientific research honor society) and Phi Beta Kappa. He later graduated from the University of Michigan with a Master of Arts in Actuarial Science in 1964. He achieved the designation of Fellow, the highest designation in the Society of Actuaries, and rose to become Senior Vice President and Corporate Actuary at John Hancock Life Insurance Company. Barry was also Chairman of the Board of Directors at the American Red Cross at Massachusetts Bay, and Chairman at Harvard Pilgrim Health Care.
Barry Shemin was the cherished husband of Amy Abrich Shemin for 57 years, beloved father of Jill Lagos Shemin, loved brother Paul Shemin, and father-in-law to his son Joshua Emmanuel Lagos. Barry leaves two nieces, Emily Shemin and Elizabeth Shemin Price, and one grand-nephew Henry Price.
