André is survived by his son Alex Peltekian, daughter Kathy (Harmon) Peltekian, sisters Jeanette (Kiminas) Peltekian, Alice (Solloa) Peltekian, Madeline (Baines) Peltekian, Louise (Simon) Peltekian and brother Pierre Peltekian. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 39 years, Alice Peltekian in 2006 and his son André Peltekian in 1994.
André was born on April 9th, 1940 in Saint Chamond, France to Aram and Lea Peltekian. In 1956, at the age of 16, he along with his sister Alice, arrived in the United States to join the rest of their family and start a new life as American citizens.
He began working the assortment of odd jobs from busboy to elevator operator until he formed a company with his two brothers, Arthur and Pierre, in the sheet metal industry.
Attending dances at St. Mary’s Armenian Apostolic church, of which Neshan G. Hintlian was the godfather and a founding member, André met Alice Hintlian and they soon began their journey as family when they wed in 1966 and shortly welcomed the birth of their two children André and Alex Peltekian.
As Neshan Hintlian started to age out of his successful oriental rug business in the 1980’s, it was a perfect transition for André to start taking over duties. Through long hours and hard work he continued the uphold Hintlian Oriental Rugs for two more decades, himself becoming one of Washington’s most trusted and respected oriental rug experts.
André was a builder and craftsman throughout his life. Working with his hands was his true passion. In retirement, he found a new favorite pastime. Creating his own rugs, from salvaged details of scrapped rugs, left over from his business. It gave him great joy to distribute these gems freely to those he loved.
He was a quiet, stoic, hard-working, loving, husband and father. We will deeply miss him, his work and the selfless support he brought to his friends and family.
Visitation with relatives and friends will occur at St. Mary's Armenian Apostolic Church, 42nd & Fessenden St., N.W., Washington, DC 20016 on Day, December 5, 2019 at 10:30 –11:30 a.m. Funeral Services will follow at 11:30 a.m. with interment following the funeral at Rock Creek Cemetery.
