John F. Olsen 79, beloved husband of Sue Ellen Olsen (Smiles), loving father and father-in-law of Douglas and Denise Olsen, Jeffrey and Theresa Olsen, and Cheryl and Brian MacLeod, passed away on March 14, 2020.
Born in Staten Island, to Obed and Ruth Olsen, John attended Sacred Heart Elementary School and St. Peters High School. He received his BS in Chemistry from Wagner College, and earned his PhD in theoretical chemistry from New York University. Dr. Olsen taught organic and inorganic chemistry at the College of Staten Island and the former Richmond College for 45 years, chairing the chemistry department at CSI from 2000 until his retirement in 2012.
Dr. Olsen enjoyed playing golf, sailing, skiing, and bike riding. He especially enjoyed traveling the country and the world, having visited all 50 states and numerous countries, with his family and friends. Dr. Olsen was a long-time member of the Richmond County Yacht Club and Great Kills Yacht Club where he enjoyed racing and cruising his sailboats on Raritan Bay and beyond.
Dr. Olsen also cherished his time at his country home in Masthope, Pennsylvania, where he spent many winters skiing with his family. During his retirement he enjoyed sunny days playing golf at his winter home in Daytona Beach, Florida.
He will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren, Scott, Andrew, Victoria, Nicholas, and Jack, for his adventurous spirit and good humor.
Dr. Olsen lived life fully, sharing his love of life with his wife, children and their spouses, grandchildren, niece and nephews, and his lifelong friends.
He will be greatly missed.
