Our Mum/Gramma/Gram/Great Granny Annie passed on peacefully leaving behind a beautiful legacy.
Mum was born during the Spanish Flu Pandemic in North Vancouver. She was the youngest of four children, to David and Jane Kirkness. David and Jane immigrated from Scotland and set up a meat market in Upper Lonsdale with David’s brother, John. Mum was born above that market. When mum was a young child the family left B.C and settled in High Prairie, Alberta. She went to school here and made many lifelong friendships.
After she was finished her schooling the family moved back to B.C and lived in Fort St. John. Here, Mum worked as a Post Mistress, she was very proud of her job as it was during the construction of the Alaska Highway in wartimes.
In 1947, the family moved to Port Coquitlam bought property on Devon Road and established Blakeburn Blueberry Farm. Mum left the farm to take a job as Post Mistress in Port Melon. This is where she met the love of her life, Fred Scott. They were married November 5, 1949. Mum became mother to Fred’s son Barry. After having 2 children in the lower mainland they moved to Woodfibre, B.C to raise their family. Here they had 2 more children. Mum loved to tell the story about David nearly being born on the company tugboat in the middle of the night on the way to the hospital. When she was about to deliver her 4th, Chris, they took no chances and Mum stayed with her parents in Port Coquitlam.
Sadly, Fred passed away in 1968 forcing Mum to leave Woodfibre. She moved the family to Port Coquitlam and after a move to Maple Ridge for a few years returned to Poco. Mum got a job as a Dietary Aide at Riverview, and worked there until her retirement at 65.
Mum loved to cook and everyone loved to eat what she cooked!! We all have many fond memories of her cooking! We had many laughs after she lost her sight but still keep coming up with a cake on our birthdays. They were interesting to say the least! The family remembers her wheat grass drinks!
Mum’s greatest joy was her family and she loved being around them.
Nothing stopped her!! Even at the age of 100 she was camping at Nanaimo Lake with the whole family! At age 101 she was boating to Pitt Lake! There was no holding her back from a chance to be with all her family.
She always had a song in her heart and had a great sense of humour always making everyone laugh, right up to the end!
Mum is predeceased by her husband Fred Henry Scott, her grandson Joshua David Chapman, her son-in-laws Dennis Chapman & Gordie Teichman.
