Robert “Bob” J. Huls, Sr., age 91 , died Friday, May 22, 2020 at Ogle County Hospice Serenity Home. He was born March 8, 1929 to Albert and Thelma (Hamilton) Huls. Bob attended Rockford schools, then served in the Naval Reserves and went on to enlist in the Air Force. While serving in the Air Force he married his sweetheart, Pat Way, on June 25, 1951 in Dubuque, Iowa. After his discharge from the Air Force he worked for Smith Oil Co. in Rockford. In 1957 he moved his family to Woodruff, Wi where he operated Bob’s Standard Service Station in Minocqua until 1964 when they moved back to Illinois and he began working at Quality Metal Finishing in Byron until his retirement in 1995. Bob also spent time as an auxiliary deputy for the Ogle County Sheriff’s Dept. He was a member of the United Church of Byron.
After retiring he spent the next 16 years doting on and caring for Pat, the love of his life, until her death in 2011. They had been married for 60 years, and it was a loss he never got over.
Bob is survived by his daughter Pam (Harold) Long, Sanibel, FL and sons Robert “Butch” Huls, Rockford and Jon Huls, Janesville, WI, his firstborn grandson Joshua Anderson (Jennifer Pauley) - who have been such a blessing in handling his affairs & caring for him - also grandchildren Rob Anderson, Jesse Huls, Caitlin (Long)McLendon, Lindsey (Anderson) Svatos, Monica Tibetts, Jennifer (Huls) Carrig and Jessica Huls, as well as 7 great-grandsons and 5 great-granddaughters, a sister Ruth Wittig, Nokomis, FL, brother-in-law Richard “Toby” (Patsy) Way, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Bob was predeceased by his wife Pat, daughter Merri Anderson and son Craig.
No services are planned at this time. A memorial is being established for Serenity Home. Arrangements are being made by Sunset Funeral Home.
