Vladimir “Bill” Charlap, proud World War II Navy veteran, last living in Chestnut Ridge, NY, was received into Christ’s loving arms today, June 3, 2020. He leaves behind Jean, his wife of 70 beautiful years; his daughters Claudia Gerbino and husband Dennis of Middletown NY; Melanie Fedak and husband Timothy of Westminster MD. He was predeceased by his eldest daughter, Valentina, who was married to Joel Evans of Newburgh NY. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Kathy Wentz, Christine Della Donna, and Nick and Matt Warholak, along with five great-grandchildren .
Bill was attached to Flight Airwing 7 as a US Navy Aviation Machinist’s Mate 2nd Class, and served at Dunkeswell, England among other stations. He was also a former chaplain with the VFW Post 12148 in Ramsey, NJ. He was a faithful parishioner of St John the Baptist Orthodox Church in Spring Valley, NY. For many years he played the prima domra in the NY Balalaika Orchestra, the Troika Balalaika Orchestra, and in the BDAA. His love of the Russian folk culture was instilled in his family. What is most wonderful is that he exemplified putting God and family first; always lending a hand to those in need. He was the role model of hard working and honest living. He taught his values to his family through working in the garden and orchard, building and fixing things with his own hands, playing musical instruments, dancing, singing, and being creative. He adored his family, but his greatest love was his wife, Jean.
A private family funeral will be held on June 5, 2020. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a worthy cause of your choosing. As dad always did, help those in need.
