Matthews, Shirley Mae-84, of Halifax passed away on October 7, 2020 after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s. Shirley was born March 24, 1936 to the late Clifford and Margaret (Sharpe) Short.
Her retirement from the Sear’s Catalogue Department allowed her to spend many summers camping at the South Mountain Campground. She was an active member of the Spryfield Salvation Army Corps and volunteered as a Brownie Leader. She loved to sing in the church and was a long-time pianist for the Corps. Her true passion was her sewing and knitting. She was a seamstress to her friends, family, community and church. She spent countless hours knitting hats and finger puppets for the IWK NICU. She was recognized by the IWK for her contributions over the years. Shirley will also be remembered for making the best biscuits and graham wafer pie.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Amiel; four children, Stephen (Marilyn), Wanda, Debbie (Chevie Publicover), and Heather (Kim Smith); seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
The family would like to extend their thanks to the VON and Northwood Homecare for their care and compassion.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday October 13, 2020 from 10:00am-12:00pm in Cruikshank’s Halifax Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street. A private interment will follow.
