Eligio was born December 1, 1936, in Dinalupihan, Bataan, Philippines. Known as “Ed” among friends, he went by many names in his lifetime, including Chief, Ely and Big Kahuna (self-proclaimed). But the most important to him were husband, Tatay (dad) and Lolo (grandpa).
Eligio served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years, rising to the rank of Chief before retiring in 1980. After his retirement from the Navy, Eligio worked for the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and then the United States Postal Service. He was a member of the Freemasons for more than 35 years, and was appointed to the Grand Lodge family in 1996.
An avid golfer, Eligio teed off in golf courses in the Philippines and across the United States in search of the perfect game. Throughout their marriage, Eligio and his wife, Luviminda, took the time to see the world, visiting Europe, South America, Asia and Australia.
It didn’t matter how long he lived in the United States, Eligio felt the Philippines was still his home. He went home every year and always gave generously to those who were still there. His last wish was to be brought back to the Philippines to be buried.
Eligio liked his soup, his cheesecake and his tea, and ended every prayer before dinner with “play ball!” He was pragmatic and stubborn to a fault, but also generous and kind. He would probably hate having so many pictures of himself on the Internet as one of his favorite lines was “Don’t put that picture on Facebook.”
Eligio is survived by his wife of 50 years, Luviminda, his daughter, Doreen Pangilinan Alberts, son-in-law David Alberts, granddaughters Barbara and Veronica Alberts, and sisters Celia and Ofelia. He is preceded in death by his four half-brothers.
Eligio lived a full life and will be deeply missed by his family and the friends he’s made throughout the years.
