Respecting Asian funeral traditions: the why behind the design

Chapel of Eternal Peace and Garden of Eternal Peace give Houston’s Asian families, especially those with Chinese, Vietnamese and other East Asian heritages, a setting where their most meaningful traditions are supported with care and understanding.

A key cultural foundation in many of these traditions is feng shui, the ancient practice of arranging spaces to harmonize with the flow of qi, or life energy. In burial planning, this means selecting locations, orientations and architectural designs that encourage peace for the departed and their families.

The age-old belief that proper burial placement brings well-being to future generations influenced the creation of the Garden of Eternal Peace’s pagoda entrances, celestial animal symbolism and central fountain—all designed to guide qi and foster spiritual balance.

Families often consult a feng shui master to choose not only a burial site but also an auspicious time and environment for mourners to gather. Many East Asian families observe extended visitation periods—commonly a three-day wake—where family members may stay overnight, pay respects and recite prayers or burn incense to help guide their loved ones’ journeys. A family may also wish to witness the start of a loved one’s cremation.

Chapel of Eternal Peace includes a witnessing room, where up to 75 guests can gather for final words, prayers and quiet reflection before a cremation. Two other chapels—seating 200 guests and 150 guests—can be customized to each family’s needs. Both chapels have kitchenettes.
