She is survived by her loving family: daughters Moira, Ginny and Cindy; sons-in-law Alex and Paul; grandsons Isaac, Curtis, Elijah and Spencer; granddaughter Alexa; great-grandsons Shiye and Zaidyn; and great-granddaughter Florence. She was loved by her many nieces and nephews and a wide circle of friends. Doreen married her beloved Fionn in 1957 and they celebrated 62 years together before his passing in 2019.
Doreen was born in 1932 to the Reverend James H Stark and Mary Louise Stark (nee Elgin) of Veteran, Alberta, the middle of their five children. She trained at Vancouver Normal School and the University of Manitoba and received her Master's Degree in Education from UBC. Doreen was a talented, inspiring teacher. She was President of the BC Primary Teachers' Association and served on the Primary Program Steering Committee for the Ministry of Education. After retirement, she continued to advance children's education in leadership roles at the BC Retired Teachers Association. During her distinguished 42 year career, Doreen taught in Alberta, BC, Scotland, Ontario and Manitoba.
Music was a lifelong passion for Doreen. She was a talented pianist, singer and choral conductor - both at school and church - from childhood to the last days of her life. She will be sadly missed by her many musical friends, most latterly Abbotsford's Happy Gang and Trinity Memorial United Church.
Doreen had an adventurous spirit, travelling widely throughout her life; mainly with her favourite companion, Fionn. She enjoyed golf and curling. She loved the theatre, dance and live music performances.
A celebration of Doreen Young's long, wonderful life will be held on Friday April 14, 2023 at 2.00pm at Trinity Memorial United Church, 33737 George Ferguson Way, Abbotsford, BC V2S 2M4. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Ridge Meadows Hospice Society would be greatly appreciated.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.woodlawnfh-abbotsford.com for the Young family.
