Peacefully passed at Abbotsford Hospital Dec.19 after a short illness. Kay was born in Poland as one of 5 children born to Antonina and Jan Cymbura. She survived the ravages of the second world war under severe duress with only her mother and her siblings remaining on their homestead. After marrying Andrew Makara and birthing 3 children the family emigrated to Matsqui, B.C. in 1958 with the help of John Makara, Andrew’s father, to live and become lifelong berry farmers. While farming raspberries and blueberries in the early years, Kazimiera was the most tireless worker and dedicated loving mother. She managed large crews and befriended many of the Indian workers that harvested berries for Makara Farms. The family were prominent blueberry growers in the Abbotsford area for more than 60 yrs. In her later years she enjoyed her time on travels and partying with her favorite acquaintances.
Kazimiera was the last survivor of 5 siblings. She is survived by her son Michael (Mary) Makara, Joan (Harvey) Smith and Anna (Ron) Tymkiw and 4 grandchildren; Jason Smith (Melissa) and Vanessa (Chris) Martin and Dana Makara, Michael (Jr.) Makara and Stephan Makara; 7 great-grandchildren, Madison, Kai-ann and Roxanne Makara, Sophia and Charlie Smith; Daniel and Josh Martin.
Memorial service will be at Henderson’s Fraser Valley Funeral Home, 34537 Marshall Road, Abbotsford, on Saturday Dec. 28 at 1:00 pm, with cremated remains to be interned at Musselwhite Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice.
