Shawn was born at Matsqui Sumas Abbotsford Hospital on March 25, 1964. He spent his childhood years in Abbotsford, B.C., Halifax, N.S, Vancouver, B.C., and Victoria, B.C. He had a flair for mathematics: graduating from Belmont Secondary School on Vancouver Island in 1982; convocating with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Electrical Engineering from UBC in May 1989; and using his education to pursue careers working at MDA Space, McDonald Detwiller, MDSI and Digital systems.
Shawn had a passionate and eclectic love of music (once trying to form a band), a joy for watching movies (especially the Lord of the Rings), a love for books (particularly science fiction and high fantasy) and an ongoing interest in playing chess and baking treats.
Sadly, on November 28, 2012, Shawn sustained a major head injury due to a motor vehicle accident. He spent the last 13 years in care at extended care homes in Mission and Abbotsford.
Shawn is survived by his loving mom, Lily Young, his children Charis and Paden, his siblings Dawn, Shalegh (Balan), Patrick (Wendy), 6 nieces, 2 nephews and a great niece. He was predeceased by his brother Kerry Young (1966) and his father Ronald Young (April 2020).
The past 13 years in care were difficult for Shawn. He is now at peace and no longer in pain. In the words of Tolkien, “Moonlight drowns out all but the brightest stars.”
