It is with profound sadness, we announce the passing of Vernell (Vern) Louise Freybe (née Fischer). On July 2, 2023 Vern passed peacefully, at the age of 91, surrounded by loved ones. She was predeceased by Walter, her loving husband of 68 years and survived by her son Robert (Toots), and daughters Gladys (Michael) and Andrea (David). Vern was also a wonderful Omi to many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Vern was born in Lockwood Saskatchewan, on June 28, 1932. She was the 2nd oldest of 7 children and had many stories of the challenges and fun of growing up in a small town on the prairies - the long, hard winters, hot and dusty summers, no running water, working on the only switchboard and being the only opera lover in town.
Vern left Lockwood for the big city of Saskatoon to work in a marketing office, which is where she would meet the love of her life, Walter. Shortly after their first date, they became engaged and began planning their new life together. They married in 1954 and embarked on the adventure of a lifetime, packing all their belongings in their car and driving from Saskatoon to Vancouver on their honeymoon. Soon after their arrival to Vancouver, they started their family and the first of what would be many successful family businesses. Vern not only worked as a homemaker caring for her family but also supported Walter in the business, helping to fulfil their dreams.
Vern and Walter travelled many places. They were always sure to experience the best food and take in as much of the local art, history and music as possible. They also enjoyed being out on the water sailing on their boat.
Vern had an artistic eye which she put into everything she touched. Her food presentations, table settings, floral arrangements and garden were pure perfection. She was a painter, a chef, a baker, a gardener, a Jeopardy aficionado… Not to mention a spectacular wife, Mother, Omi, and friend. Without fail, she always had a shoulder and an ear waiting - geared up to hear a good gossip, cheer everyone on, or just hug and listen (keen to mend hearts by feeding tummies with whatever she was currently cooking or had freshly baked.)
No matter the circumstances, Vern was a safe space. She loved her family with vigour and devotion.
Vern created a home her family would flock to. A home they went to gather - always filled with laughter, love, acceptance, great food, wonderful conversations, and an abundance of memories. Her kitchen was always busy… Every meal bursting with love (and butter)! Vern had the ability to make each moment feel special for everyone around her.
Vern was the truest example of someone who lived for her family. We are incredibly thankful for the many years we had with her. She will be greatly missed.
As a family, we find great comfort in hearing memories you have of our mother and grandmother. Please feel free to leave any stories in the comments.
We would like to express our deep appreciation and thanks to the staff at Carrington in Mission BC, Mission Home Health, and the Abbotsford Hospital for the kindness they showed Vern and her family.
No formal funeral will be held as per Vern’s wishes. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to one of the many causes Vern held dear. A few of which were BC Children’s Hospital, BC Cancer, Red Cross, and Salvation Army.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.hendersonsabbotsfordfunerals.com for the Freybe family.
