Al was born on September 27, 1947 to Ollie and Leotis Camp in Clearwater, Florida. After graduating from Tarpon Springs High School in 1965, he served in the Florida Army National Guard and earned an associate’s degree from St. Petersburg Junior College, all while beginning a career in the retail food industry: a career spanning four decades.
In 1976, he reconnected with his childhood friend, Becky Henderson, who became the love of his life. They married on June 4, 1977. Very shortly thereafter, they relocated to Texas when Al was promoted to help supervise Winn-Dixie’s acquisition of the Buddies Supermarket chain.
Al and his family joined Grace Temple Baptist Church in Denton, Texas in 1984, becoming actively involved in various ministries, and making lifelong friendships. In 1997, Al felt a call from God to retire from the corporate world and to surrender to full-time Christian ministry. While furthering his education by taking courses at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, he served in ministry positions at Grace Temple and at Denton Bible Church.
After retiring in 2014, Al and Becky moved to Abilene, Texas to be closer to their only son and his family. There, Al began the third chapter of his life, joining and serving with Pioneer Drive Baptist Church. He particularly enjoyed the Nehemiah Ministry, tackling small construction projects and home repairs, primarily for widows, but also for those who would struggle to pay for such work.
He and Becky enjoyed travelling, including their annual service with the Church Builders ministry. Al enjoyed vegetable gardening and landscaping. He particularly relished playing games and camping with his grandchildren.
Al was predeceased by his parents and his older brother, Vernon. He is survived by his wife Becky; his son Rich Traylor (Ruth); his grandchildren Mallory, Madison, and Grayson; his sister Cynthia Taylor (Jimmy); his brother-in-law Sam Henderson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Nehemiah Ministry of Pioneer Drive, Servants Hearts Ministries in Guatemala, Baptist Church Builders of Texas, and/or Gideons International.
Fond memories or condolences can be left to the family on his online guestbook below.
